“The Persians” is the oldest surviving complete work of ancient Greek dramaturgy and at the same time the first theatrical recording of historical events. Aeschylus, who witnessed the Battle of Salamis first-hand, offers a theatrical reportage of war just eight years after the catastrophe. Christos Theodoridis approaches the work as a deep anti-war cry, continuing his directorial path on politically charged and crucial contemporary issues. Twenty-two people await the news of an accomplished disaster. When the messenger returns from the front, his words give form to fear: the loss is absolute. Body and thought are paralyzed. No action seems possible. Only lamentation remains. At the center of the performance is humanity facing loss. The “tragedy of the defeated” opens a timeless dialogue: the defeated do not belong only to the past, but to every era, to every side. The names that the Chorus seeks are the names of all those who were lost and continue to be lost in the wars of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
