OPEN PRESENTATION OF THE WORKS OF THE 9th Ancient Drama Workshop

Saturday, September 6, 7:30 p.m.
Ancient Theater of Philippi
Free admission

The Municipal Regional Theater of Kavala presents the shows that resulted from the 9th Ancient Drama Workshop, which was held again this year as part of the program of the 68th Philippi Festival.

In this year’s edition, an 18-member team of participants selected through an open call worked for eleven consecutive days composing ancient and contemporary texts that together address universal issues that never cease to be relevant. The historical moments of the myths mirror and intertwine with our own times, which also seem to claim the title of historicity. With four renowned creators as instructors, the workshop attempted to approach new ways of storytelling with today’s world in mind. And on Saturday, September 6, they will make their first stop on this journey of exploration to share with us, in the form of a work in progress, the first samples of their work.

A paper based on Aeschylus’ Persians.

Taking as its starting point the theme of the 9th Ancient Drama Workshop, which consists of a search for the modern-day hero, the working group of six actors explores the relationship between Aeschylus’ universe and the present day.

On this night, six people somewhere in the world await news of an impending disaster. The news arrives and it is horrific, confirming everyone’s fears. Tonight, six people feel powerless to do anything. They stand suspended between the magnitude of their grief and the seemingly impossible task of responding. Tonight, six people can only cry.

“And the night never ended, it lasted a thousand years.”

On Stage: Artemis Kyvelou, Giannis Lazaridis, Kostas Mansouris, Marianna Natsi, Penny Sakellariadi, Michalis Rizos

*The design uses excerpts from Aeschylus’ Persians, translated by Panagiotis Moullas, the collection of short stories “From the Land of Bitter Oranges” by Hassan Kanafani, translated by Nasim Alatra, and the novel “Anima” by Wazdi Muawad, translated by Nikos Kourkoulos.
