“ΕΙRΕΝΕ” is a celebration of a rural world that was lost; it is a comic, irresistible argument, a festival of the common man using the very smoke of war as raw material, a lit shadow puppet screen amidst the horror.
The original comedy by Aristophanes was first staged at the Great Dionysia in 421 BC and won second prize. The comedy reflects the intense social exhaustion from the Peloponnesian War and deals with lyrical eloquence and the familiar Aristophanic sarcasm regarding the absurd obsession with war and its devastating consequences on people’s daily lives, work, and happiness. Aristophanes contrasts the violence and profit of the warmongers with the fertility, love, and collective prosperity brought by peace. Despite the seemingly utopian solution, the comedy is not naive: it recognizes the resistance, the interests, and the inertia that hinder the restoration of peace.
