“Another Thebes,” the “phenomenon” of recent theater seasons, now in its third year in Athens with consecutive sold-out performances and over 100,000 viewers, will be performed on Sunday, August 24, at 9:00 p.m. at the Ancient Theater of Philippi, as part of the 68th Philippi Festival.
THE PERFORMANCE
A writer meets a 20-year-old patricide, Martin, in prison over a period of several months. His goal is to write a play based on the young prisoner’s story, in which he suggests that Martin play himself on stage. When this is ultimately prohibited by the relevant ministry, the role is taken on by Federico, a young actor with whom the writer is now working.
Sergio Blanco, a French-Uruguayan writer and one of the most powerful contemporary voices in Spanish-language theater, presents us with a modern study of male identity, oppression, violence and crime, punishment and discrimination, but also the creative processes of theater itself, with references to the myth of Oedipus and Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment.
The distinguished director Vangelis Theodoropoulos highlighted the writer’s multi-layered work with a production that was highly praised by critics and captivated audiences thanks to its excellent pacing and evocative atmosphere.
The performance has established itself as an important theatrical event mainly due to the exceptional performances of the actors, Thanos Lekkas in the role of the Writer and the talented popular actor Dimitris Kapouranis, who won the Dimitris Horn Award 2022-2023 for his performance in the dual role of Martin/Federico.
