“In Santiago, the capital of the kingdom of Chile, at the very moment of the great earthquake of the year 1647, in which many thousands of people lost their lives, a young Spaniard by the name of Jeronimo Rugera, accused of a certain crime, stood before a pillar of the prison where he had been confined, wishing to hang himself.” At the time of a cataclysm, nature puts everything into its true perspective. When all of man’s structures collapse, that which keeps humans close to their civilization is something intangible. Perhaps it is faith, in God or in others. The hope that everything can be rebuilt from scratch. The certainty of an embrace that seems like the only solid thing left, while everything has just crumbled. Beneath the grandeur of destruction, we are all equal. What seemed like unforgivable crimes until yesterday, now looks like memories from past lives. Man is free. For a moment. Because when the law of men returns, it will be more relentless than ever. The sinners will seem more sinful than ever. Woe to those who found happiness amidst the disaster.
