The Municipal and Regional Theatre of Kavala (DI.PE.TH.E. Kavala), as a member of the International Network of Ancient Drama, with the support and funding of the Ministry of Culture, invites applications for participation in the 10th Ancient Drama Workshop. This is an intensive, creative research camp focused on educational practice and experimentation, offering a contemporary and refreshing perspective on the study of Ancient Drama. Centered on the experiential process of rehearsals, this year’s edition brings together 18 participants and three distinguished theatre directors and educators—Varvara Douka, Giannis Leontaris, and Maria Savvidou—for a ten-day journey of artistic research and exploration.
Drawing inspiration from the concept of “transformation,” the central theme of the 69th Philippi Festival, the workshop groups will explore three different paths of transformation through ancient myths. Specifically, Varvara Douka will lead the workshop “Cross-Dressing and Disguise,” investigating the delicate boundary between the tragic and the comic through the ritual disguises of Pentheus in The Bacchae and Mnesilochus in Thesmophoriazusae. Giannis Leontaris will approach Aristophanes’ Ecclesiazusae, examining the transformation of women into men not as an outward celebration, but as an inner ritual of transition. Meanwhile, Maria Savvidou will focus on the role of the Messenger in the messenger speeches of ancient tragedy, approaching the figure as a witness, narrator, and creator of stage action.
