The Municipal and Regional Theatre of Kavala (DI.PE.TH.E. Kavala), as part of the 69th Philippi Festival, announces an open call for participation in the free workshop “The Metamorphosis of Antigone”, an original artistic initiative that connects ancient drama with local history.
At the heart of the workshop is the creation of three-dimensional portrait dioramas of contemporary “Antigones”, inspired by the tobacco workers of Kavala and the historic tobacco workers’ strike of July 1933—women whose struggles, memories, and sacrifices left an indelible mark on the city’s history.
The workshop will be led by Giorgos Karakantzas, a visual artist and director with extensive experience in experimental theatre and visual art installations.

- Presentation Dates: 19, 20 & 21 July 2026
- Duration: 3 hours daily (schedule to be arranged in consultation with participants)
- Number of Participants: Up to 16 people (aged 15 and above)
- Venue: Antigone Valakou Theatre
The workshop is intended for individuals interested in the visual arts, preferably with experience in hands-on artistic techniques such as collage, painting, and construction.
Participants are invited to bring objects that could be incorporated into their portrait pieces and to conduct a brief research project on a tobacco worker who took part in the Kavala tobacco workers’ protest of 1933.
